I'm not completely sure, I think it's designed to give control when working over the top of piece, by creating a sled to give controlled movements.

Not used yet. But arrived well packaged and undamaged. Tried fitting the baxse unit feeds in a 2 miter tracks in order to be able to slide the baxse unit on the table without repositioning failed as the units feed are just to wide to fit in the track.
